Rasheedat Ajibade, Jennifer Echegini score as PSG beat Fleury in French league
Nigeria internationals Rasheedat Ajibade and Jennifer Echegini were both on target as Paris Saint-Germain secured a 3-1 victory over Fleury in the Première Ligue on Sunday.
The victory came just three days after PSG’s emphatic 5-0 UEFA Women’s Champions League win over OH Leuven, with Paulo César’s side quickly turning their attention to the first Île-de-France derby of the league season.
PSG dominated possession from the opening stages and repeatedly tested Fleury goalkeeper Katriina Talaslahti. Their pressure finally paid off in the 22nd minute when a Fleury defender handled Léa Morissaint’s effort inside the penalty area.
Morissaint stepped up to take the resulting penalty and calmly converted to give PSG the lead and score her first goal of the season.
With the support of around 200 travelling fans, PSG continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage in the 36th minute. Tara Elimbi Gilbert delivered a cross into the box, which Echegini met with a looping header that beat Talaslahti.
Fleury attempted to respond after the interval, but PSG’s defence held firm to deny the hosts a route back into the contest.
PSG then appeared to have added a third shortly after the restart, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Ajibade would not be denied for long, however.
In the 58th minute, the Nigerian forward capitalised on a defensive mix-up to score PSG’s third goal and register her third goal of the season across all competitions.
Fleury continued to press and were rewarded in the 75th minute when second-half substitute Shana Chossenotte pulled one back for the hosts.
PSG immediately searched for a fourth goal, with Jackie Groenen coming close when her powerful effort struck the post. Further opportunities followed, including one for Olga Carmona in the 81st minute, but neither side could add to the scoreline.
The 3-1 victory means PSG maintain their perfect start to the Première Ligue campaign and move level on points with OL Lyonnes at the top of the table.
The two sides are scheduled to meet on Saturday, October 17, in a top-of-the-table clash.
Before then, several PSG players will join their respective national teams for the first international break of the season.
