Remo Stars edge Best Talent in thrilling eight-goal friendly
Remo Stars Football Club secured a dramatic 5–3 victory over Best Talent Football Club at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, in an eight-goal thriller that saw both sides produce an entertaining contest.
The Sky Blues appeared to be cruising after taking a 3–0 lead, but Best Talent mounted a stunning second-half comeback inspired by a hat-trick from Usman Musa. However, two goals deep into stoppage time ultimately denied the Mowe-based side a remarkable recovery.
Olumide Ajibolade's men started brightly and opened the scoring in the 20th minute, capitalising on an opening in the Best Talent defence. Remo Stars doubled their advantage six minutes later to take a 2–0 lead into the interval.
Best Talent attempted to respond through the attacking efforts of Usman Musa, Oluwayinka Oreoluwa and Asaolu Joshua, but the hosts maintained control for the remainder of the half.
At the break, Remo Stars led 2–0.
Best Talent coach Farouk Yusuf made an early tactical adjustment, introducing Olaniyan Ezekiel and Fadeyi Joshua for Joseph Emmanuel and goalkeeper Joel Jarious. The changes injected fresh energy into the visitors, but Remo Stars struck again in the 56th minute to extend their lead to 3–0.
Despite the deficit, Best Talent refused to give up. Musa began the comeback in the 63rd minute when he pulled a goal back to make it 3–1.
The forward struck again in the 70th minute, reducing the deficit to 3–2 and putting the hosts under increasing pressure.
Best Talent made another double substitution, bringing on Sodiq and Smart for Ahmad Mohammad Cisse and Oluwayinka Oreoluwa as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off dramatically in stoppage time. Musa completed his hat-trick in the 92nd minute, bringing Best Talent level at 3–3 and completing a remarkable comeback from three goals down.
However, Remo Stars responded almost immediately. The hosts restored their lead in the 95th minute before adding a fifth goal in the 97th minute to seal a 5–3 victory.
The late double ended Best Talent’s hopes of completing one of the comeback stories of the match and handed Remo Stars a hard-fought win on home soil.
Speaking after the match, Best Talent coach Farouk Yusuf praised his players for their spirited performance and said a brief lapse in concentration contributed to the defeat.
“Big kudos to these boys for standing toe to toe with Remo Stars. They deserve every commendation for coming from 3–0 down to level with the former NPFL champions in their own ground. If not for a loss of concentration and the desire to probably snatch a victory, that caused us the defeat. But sincerely, they did well,” the former Coca-Cola youth team coach said.
