Eboboritse Uwejamomere satisfied with Golden Eaglets squad for China tour
Nigeria U17 national team head coach, Eboboritse Uwejamomere, has expressed satisfaction with the quality of players currently in camp as preparations intensify for an international friendly tournament in China and the upcoming WAFU B U17 Championship qualifiers.
The newly appointed Golden Eaglets handler revealed that the team commenced camping last Tuesday and has already held several training sessions as part of efforts to build a competitive squad for future assignments.
According to Uwejamomere, the bulk of the invited players are graduates of the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) U15 programme, a pathway designed to nurture young talents and ease their transition into Nigeria's youth national teams.
Speaking to NFF Media, the coach said he was encouraged by the level of commitment and quality displayed by the players since camp opened.
"It's been good. We opened camp last Tuesday. We have had a few training sessions," Uwejamomere said.
"Just preparing for the China trip that will come up midweek next week. So, I am happy so far. The large proportion of players invited, I think probably about 95 percent of them are from FIFA TDS U15 scheme of last year.
"So, we have given them the privilege to come in for the first camp of the new U17 as they have been in the U15 boys so they can progress now."
The trip to China is expected to serve as an important assessment period for the technical crew, who will use the tournament to evaluate the players in a competitive environment before trimming the squad.
Uwejamomere explained that only those who demonstrate the required quality and potential during the tour will remain in contention for future call-ups.
"We will have a look at them then go to China and then when we come back the few that really impress that we think will meet up will be invited back," he added.
While the China tournament is an important step in the team's development, the coach stressed that the primary objective remains the WAFU B U17 Championship qualifiers scheduled for November in Burkina Faso.
He disclosed that plans are already in place to reopen camp shortly after the team's return from China, with an expanded player pool expected to include standout performers from the U15 programme and other emerging talents across the country.
"Apart from the China trip, the main one is the WAFU B U17 qualifiers in November, set to take place in Burkina Faso.
"So, once we come back from China the full focus is on that. We are planning again, as we come back from China to open camp in late July or early August then we will start seeing some new players including the top performing U15 boys."
The Golden Eaglets are beginning a new cycle under Uwejamomere, with the ultimate ambition of securing qualification for both the U17 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U17 World Cup.
The China tour is expected to provide an early indication of the team's readiness as Nigeria seeks to rebuild one of the most successful youth football programmes in world football.
