Road to LA 2028: Key players pull out of Super Falcons match vs Comoros

The Nigeria's senior women's national team have begun preparations for their Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign with 14 players in camp at Ikenne, ahead of Friday’s second-round first-leg clash against Comoros.

Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen had initially invited 28 players for the qualifying tie, but injuries, personal requests and other commitments have forced several changes to the squad.

The team commenced training at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Monday as Eguavoen works to prepare the Falcons for the opening leg.

Defender Ashley Plumptre is among those unavailable after requesting to be excused from the assignment due to a sprain and ligament injury. The experienced defender had only recently returned to the national team after missing the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations because of injury.

Benfica duo Oluwatosin Demehin and Flourish Sabastine are also absent, reportedly because of issues relating to their residence permits.

Five-time African Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala has likewise asked to be excused from the assignment, leaving Eguavoen with fewer options in attack as Nigeria begins its journey towards the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

To bolster the squad, the interim coach has drafted in Belarus-based former Falconets forward Blessing Okpe.

The Super Falcons will be looking to build momentum in camp before facing Comoros in Friday’s first-leg encounter as they continue their bid to return to the Olympic Games.
