Russia arrive Nizhny Novgorod ahead of Nigeria friendly

Players and officials of the Russia national team have arrived in Nizhny Novgorod ahead of their international friendly against Nigeria on Tuesday.

Valery Karpin’s squad completed their final training session in Yekaterinburg on October 4 before travelling to Nizhny Novgorod for the highly anticipated encounter.

It will be the second meeting between Russia and Nigeria in 16 months, with the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosts set to welcome the Super Eagles to Sovcombank Arena. Kick-off is scheduled for 17:00 Nigerian time.

Nigeria are already in Russia and have held two training sessions under head coach Eric Chelle, with 18 players taking part in Sunday’s workout.

The three-time African champions played two competitive matches during the current FIFA window. They edged Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Russia, meanwhile, have enjoyed a strong international window, defeating Iran 2-0 at the Ak Bars Arena in Kazan on September 29 before recording a commanding 6-0 victory over Namibia at the Yekaterinburg Arena on October 3.

Karpin’s side will, however, be without several key players against Nigeria, including captain Aleksandr Golovin. The Monaco midfielder returned to his club after suffering an ankle injury during the win over Iran.
