SWAN congratulates Samson Adamu on historic confirmation as CAF General Secretary

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated Nigerian football administrator, Mr Samson Adamu, on his confirmation as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Adamu’s confirmation marks a historic milestone for Nigerian sports administration, as he becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position since CAF was established in 1957.

In a statement signed by the Association’s Secretary General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on Saturday, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin described the development as a significant recognition of Adamu’s experience, professional dedication and sustained contributions to football administration and development across Africa.

“Samson Adamu’s confirmation is a proud and historic moment for Nigerian sports. It is gratifying to see a Nigerian entrusted with such an important responsibility in the administration of African football. His journey through the ranks of CAF reflects the importance of experience, consistency and professional commitment.

“We congratulate him and urge him to see this appointment as an opportunity to further strengthen CAF’s administrative structures, promote transparency, improve institutional relationships and contribute to the sustainable growth of football across the continent,” Benjamin said.

Adamu has served CAF in several key capacities, including Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments and Events, before being appointed Acting General Secretary. His experience in these roles has provided him with valuable institutional knowledge and practical understanding of the organisation’s operations.

Reacting to the confirmation, Benjamin encouraged the new CAF General Secretary to use his position to promote an inclusive, transparent and progressive administrative culture that advances the interests of African football.

The SWAN President also expressed confidence that Adamu’s experience and understanding of the continent’s football environment would support efforts to improve competition organisation, strengthen institutional capacity and enhance the overall development of the game.

“As the umbrella body of sports journalists in Nigeria, the SWAN leadership looks forward to more productive engagement with CAF under his leadership, particularly in strengthening sports media relations, access to information and professional coverage of African football competitions.

“The Association wishes Mr Adamu a successful and impactful tenure, while assuring him of its goodwill and continued support for initiatives that promote the growth of Nigerian and African football,” Benjamin added.

Adamu’s confirmation is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s representation in the administration of African football, while providing an opportunity for deeper engagement between CAF and stakeholders in the country’s sports sector.
