Flamingos face Venezuela FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup quarter final showdown
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will take on Venezuela in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 on Sunday, with both sides targeting a place in the semi-finals.
The Flamingos endured a difficult start to the competition, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening Group B fixture. However, Coach Hakeem Busari’s team responded with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico before recording an impressive 3-1 win against defending champions North Korea to secure qualification for the Round of 16
Nigeria maintained their momentum in the knockout stage, overcoming Mexico in a hard-fought encounter to book their place in the last eight. The victory has brought the Flamingos closer to another semi-final appearance as they seek to improve on their performance at the previous edition.
Venezuela, meanwhile, have returned to the competition after a ten-year absence. The South Americans began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to France but kept their hopes alive by securing three points against Zambia, another African representative, during the group stage.
They announced their potential in the Round of 16 with a surprise 1-0 victory over Germany, setting up a quarter-final meeting with Nigeria.
Despite their lengthy absence from the tournament, Venezuela boast an impressive record in recent appearances, having reached the semi-finals in their last two outings. They will be aiming to extend that run to three consecutive semi-final appearances, making them a challenging opponent for the Nigerian youngsters.
With a place in the last four at stake, the Flamingos will need to remain disciplined, make the most of their scoring opportunities and produce another assured performance against a confident Venezuelan side.
The quarter-final encounter is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 6pm local time (7pm Nigerian time) at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Rabat.
