SWAN urges Tinubu to inaugurate NSC Governing Board without delay

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to urgently inaugurate the 17-member Governing Board of the National Sports Commission (NSC), describing it as critical to effective oversight and accountability in Nigerian sports.

SWAN made the demand in the communiqué issued at the end of its 2026 Triennial National Delegates Congress in Kaduna.

The association expressed concern over the prolonged delay in implementing the provisions of the NSC Establishment Act, particularly the inauguration of the Commission’s statutory Governing Board.

The Congress specifically called on the Federal Government to “urgently revisit the implementation of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Establishment Act,” stressing that the board’s inauguration should no longer be delayed.

According to SWAN, “an operational board is essential to providing effective oversight, accountability, continuity and broad stakeholder participation in the administration of Nigerian sports.”

The association said the inauguration of the board should form an integral part of the broader reforms currently being pursued in Nigerian football and sports administration.

It urged the Federal Government to ensure that the reform process was “broad-based, transparent and guided by the relevant laws.”

SWAN further called for qualified professionals and key stakeholders to be brought into the governance structure to provide the stability and strategic direction required to reposition Nigerian sports.

The sports writers, however, commended the NSC leadership for recent achievements recorded by Nigerian athletes, particularly at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the historic qualification of the Women’s Beach Volleyball team for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Congress said the achievements demonstrated “the potential of Nigerian athletes when provided with adequate preparation, technical support and funding.”

It urged the NSC to sustain the momentum while strengthening athlete welfare, sports science, coaching development, grassroots talent identification and systematic preparation for major international competitions.

SWAN maintained that a properly constituted Governing Board would strengthen the institutional framework of the NSC and provide the oversight necessary for sustainable development of Nigerian sports.
