NFF Reset: SWAN demands stake in Normalisation Committee, Electoral College
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has demanded representation in the anticipated Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Normalisation Committee and called for the full restoration of its place in the federation’s Electoral College.
The demand followed the latest crisis in Nigerian football administration, with the resignation of the NFF President, entire Executive Committee and Secretary-General.
At its 2026 Triennial National Delegates Congress in Kaduna, SWAN described sports journalism as a strategic component of football administration and demanded that the association’s voice be reflected in the transition process.
In its communiqué, the Congress “demanded that SWAN be adequately represented in the anticipated NFF Normalisation Committee,” citing the strategic role of sports journalism in accountability, public information and stakeholder engagement.
The association also demanded “the full restoration of SWAN’s representation in the NFF Electoral College and appropriate representation on the NFF Executive Committee.”
SWAN argued that professional sports journalists are legitimate stakeholders in Nigerian football and should not be excluded from structures responsible for shaping the administration and future of the game.
The association urged the NFF Congress, National Sports Commission (NSC) and all relevant stakeholders to handle the transition with “maturity, patriotism and a collective commitment to the growth and prosperity of Nigerian football.”
It called for an inclusive, transparent and credible process capable of restoring stability and confidence in the administration of the federation.
The Congress also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing leadership, appreciating its members for their service to Nigerian football during their tenure.
SWAN said the current transition provided an opportunity to rebuild trust among football stakeholders and establish a governance structure that would prioritise the development and prosperity of the game.
The association maintained that meaningful participation of the professional sports media would strengthen transparency, accountability, communication and stakeholder confidence in the administration of Nigerian football.
