Samuel Ogazi named SEC men's runner of the week

Nigeria’s rising sprint sensation, Samuel Ogazi, has been named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Men’s Runner of the Week, earning his first weekly conference honour of the season, the league office confirmed on Tuesday.

The University of Alabama junior becomes the third Crimson Tide athlete to receive SEC weekly recognition in as many weeks, underlining the school’s impressive start to the indoor athletics season.

Ogazi claimed the men’s 400m title in emphatic fashion at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic last weekend, producing a stunning event-season debut. The 19-year-old stormed to victory in a personal-best time of 44.85 seconds (44.96 altitude-adjusted), smashing the facility record at the Albuquerque Convention Centre in the process.

The blistering performance has placed Ogazi firmly among the elite. His time currently ranks second on the world indoor list this year, 13th on the all-time indoor 400m list, and second in the history of the Alabama programme. It also stands as the second-fastest 400m mark recorded in the SEC this season.

Beyond conference and collegiate records, Ogazi’s run carried significant continental weight. He is now the fastest African over 400m this season and only the second African man to dip below 45 seconds indoors, joining fellow Nigerian Ezekiel Nathaniel in an exclusive club.

Already a Paris 2024 Olympic finalist, Ogazi continues to build momentum on the global stage, with his New Mexico performance marking a defining moment in his indoor campaign and reinforcing his status as one of Africa’s most exciting young quarter-milers.

Ogazi’s honour follows earlier SEC weekly awards for his Alabama teammates, with Katelyn Adel named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on January 27 and Doris Lemngole earning Women’s Runner of the Week honours on February 3, further highlighting the Crimson Tide’s dominance across disciplines.
