Oshoala fires 10-woman Nigeria past Zambia to revive WAFCON title defence
Nigeria reignited their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a determined 1-0 victory over Zambia on Saturday, bouncing back from their opening defeat to Malawi to boost their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
The 10-time African champions made an ideal start when veteran striker Asisat Oshoala found the breakthrough in the eighth minute, calmly finishing to hand the Super Falcons an early advantage.
Nigeria’s task became considerably more challenging five minutes before half-time as defender Oluwatosin Demehin was shown a straight red card for bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, forcing Justine Madugu’s side to play the remainder of the contest with 10 players.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Super Falcons produced a disciplined and resilient defensive performance after the break, frustrating Zambia’s sustained attacking pressure.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie delivered another assured display between the posts, while Nigeria’s backline defended resolutely to preserve the slender lead and secure a crucial three points.
The victory marked a significant response from the Super Falcons following their disappointing opening loss and breathed new life into their bid to retain the continental crown.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to their final Group C fixture against Egypt on Wednesday, August 5, knowing that another positive result could seal a place in the knockout stages as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
