Falconets surrender two-goal lead in friendly draw ahead of FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup
Nigeria's Falconets played out a 2-2 draw with FC Liberty Boys in a training match at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja as preparations continue for the Poland 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.
The two-time FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup runners-up made an impressive start, taking control of the contest with two first-half goals. Alaba Olabiyi broke the deadlock in the eighth minute after capitalising on the team's early dominance, while captain Joy Igbokwe doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute.
Head coach Moses Aduku's side looked sharp and cohesive throughout the opening half, showcasing the attacking quality they hope to carry into the global tournament.
FC Liberty Boys, however, responded strongly after the break, exploiting second-half opportunities to score twice and force a share of the spoils in an entertaining encounter.
Although the Falconets were unable to hold on to their two-goal lead, the friendly offered the technical crew another valuable opportunity to assess the squad's fitness, tactical awareness and overall match readiness ahead of the World Cup.
The Nigerian side has stepped up preparations with intensive training sessions and practice games, with the coaching staff expected to focus on tightening the defence while preserving the attacking fluency displayed in the first half.
With the countdown to the Poland 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup continuing, the Falconets will take encouragement from their attacking display as they strive to reach the tournament in top condition and mount a serious challenge for a historic maiden world title.
