Sporting Lagos claim narrow win over Ranchers Bees in NNL Super 4 opener

Sporting Lagos began their 2026 Nigeria National League Super Four campaign on a positive note, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Ranchers Bees at the Remo Stars Stadium on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The Lagos side started brightly, immediately imposing themselves with aggressive attacking play. Their intent nearly paid off in the 17th minute when Seun Akanji created the first clear opportunity, only to be denied by a sharp save from the Ranchers Bees goalkeeper.

Sustained pressure followed, with Aliyu Baba also showing flashes of danger in the final third. Despite controlling possession and territory for long stretches, Sporting Lagos initially struggled to break through a well-organized and disciplined Ranchers Bees defense.

The decisive moment came five minutes before halftime. A slick move down the wing saw Shola Oladunjoye link up with Akanji, who delivered a precise cross into the penalty area. Alex Leme rose above the defense to head home in the 40th minute, sparking celebrations on the Sporting Lagos bench.

That goal ultimately separated both sides in a match defined by tactical discipline. Ranchers Bees pressed for an equalizer after the break but failed to penetrate Sporting Lagos’ solid defensive setup, allowing the Lagos club to hold on for maximum points.

Akanji, instrumental throughout the game and provider of the match-winning assist, earned Man of the Match honors. Reflecting on the performance, he emphasized teamwork and focus.

“This award means a lot, but it’s not just about me—it’s about the team. Everyone put in a great shift today, and that’s what got us the win. We’re pleased with the start, but we know there’s still a long way to go,” he said.

The victory puts Sporting Lagos in an early leading position in the Super Four, signaling their intent in the race for silverware.

Notable figures present at the match included Sunday Dare, George Aluo, Ganiyu Majekodunmi, and former international Felix Owolabi. Also in attendance were Eric Chelle and his assistant Daniel Ogunmodede.
