Sultanate Council confirms Ramadan to begin February 18
The Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the National Moonsighting Committee, has officially confirmed the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan 1447AH. Reports from moonsighting committees across the country indicated that Tuesday, 17th February 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Sha’aban 1447AH, marked the conclusion of Sha’aban.
Following these confirmations, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), announced that Wednesday, 18th February 2026, will be observed as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH.
In a statement, the Sultan extended greetings to the Nigeria Muslim Ummah, praying for Allah’s guidance and blessings. He urged Muslims to continue their prayers for peace, progress, and development in the country, while wishing everyone a blessed Ramadan.
“May Allah (SWT) accept our religious deeds, amen,” the statement concluded.
The announcement comes as millions of Muslims in Nigeria prepare to commence the holy month of fasting, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, signed the announcement on behalf of the Sultanate Council.
