NWFL Premiership returns with Matchday eight fixtures

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership resumes today with nine mouth-watering fixtures across the country, as the battle for Super Six places intensifies and relegation fears begin to loom for struggling sides.

With the season entering a decisive phase, momentum, form and history will all come into play as teams in Groups A and B look to either consolidate their ambitions or spark a turnaround.

Group A

Naija Ratels vs Adamawa Queens

Winless in six outings, Naija Ratels are under pressure to finally kick-start their campaign. The Abuja side are one of three teams yet to taste victory this season and face an Adamawa Queens team that has shown flashes of promise despite losing their last three matches. Recent history favours the Ratels, who have won three of the last four meetings between both sides, with only last season’s 1–1 draw denying them a clean sweep.

Heartland Queens vs Bayelsa Queens

Reigning champions Bayelsa Queens travel to Owerri carrying a perfect record after six matches, firmly underlining their title credentials. Heartland Queens, coached by Obi Ogbala, have won twice this season and will hope home support inspires an upset. Interestingly, the last three league encounters between both sides including a Super Six playoff clash in Yenagoa have ended goalless.

Ekiti Queens vs Rivers Angels

Ekiti Queens look to recover from a halted winning run as they welcome Rivers Angels to their adopted home in Abeokuta. The Port Harcourt giants won five of their opening six games before suffering defeat to Bayelsa Queens. Last season’s meetings saw both teams secure identical 2–0 home victories in what were their first-ever top-flight clashes.

Ibom Angels vs Edo Queens

Behind closed doors in Uyo, Ibom Angels face an Edo Queens side in red-hot form. Since losing 3–2 to Bayelsa Queens on Matchday One, the Benin Arsenal have reeled off five straight wins. Edo Queens also boast a strong recent record in this fixture, including a commanding 4–0 triumph in Benin City at the close of the 2022/23 season.

Group B

Ahudiyannem Queens vs Confluence Queens

Still searching for their maiden NWFL victory, debutants Ahudiyannem Queens continue life on the road due to the renovation of Umuahia Township Stadium. They have drawn twice and lost five times this season. Confluence Queens arrive in Aba buoyed by a two-match unbeaten run, and this fixture marks the first top-flight meeting between both sides.

Sunshine Queens vs Nasarawa Amazons

Sunshine Queens chase only their second win of the campaign as they host unbeaten Nasarawa Amazons. The Akure side have drawn four matches the most in the league so far, while the Solid Babes remain one of just two teams yet to lose this season. Their last league meeting in 2020/21 ended in a convincing 3–0 victory for Sunshine Queens.

Abia Angels vs Dannaz Ladies

Dannaz Ladies will be eager to build on their latest result as they seek back-to-back unbeaten outings. However, they face a confident Abia Angels side that has enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, winning three of the last four encounters, including a 2–0 success last season.

FC Robo Queens vs Osun Babes

A South-West derby takes centre stage in Lagos as FC Robo Queens host Osun Babes. The visitors have posted a mixed bag of results so far, while Robo Queens will draw confidence from their last meeting a 3–1 win during the 2020/21 season.

Remo Stars Ladies vs Delta Queens

Remo Stars Ladies, beaten just once in seven matches, welcome Delta Queens to Ikenne in one of the standout fixtures of the round. Delta Queens’ three-match winning run came to an end on the last Matchday, coinciding with the appointment of Osazee Francis as head coach. Recent meetings slightly favour the hosts, who claimed a 1–0 win last season after an earlier 1–1 draw in Asaba.

As the league resumes, every point now carries added significance with Super Six dreams on one end and relegation worries on the other set to define a gripping Matchday across Nigeria.
