Super Falcons players miss out as CAF names 2026 WAFCON team of the tournament

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled its Team of the Tournament for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with Nigeria notably absent from the selection for the first time.

Champions Cameroon dominate the Best XI with four players — goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, Myriam Nyadjou, Monique Ngock and Marie Ngah.

Runners-up Malawi are represented by sisters Temwa and Tabitha Chawinga, who both impressed throughout the tournament.

Third-placed Algeria have two players in the team, Ines Belloumou and Marine Dafeur, while hosts Morocco are represented by Nohaila Benzina and Hanane Ait El Haj.

Zambia star Barbra Banda completes the star-studded XI.

Cameroon coach Valentine Nguele was also named Coach of the Tournament after guiding the Indomitable Lionesses to the WAFCON title.

The omission of Nigerian players marks a notable departure from previous editions, underlining the Super Falcons’ disappointing campaign at the tournament.

The 10-time African champions crashed out of WAFCON 2026 in the quarter final and ultimately missed out on qualification for next year's World Cup after 2-1 loss to South Africa in the Playoffs.
