Tony Ugwu's political profile soars as Mbah appoints him Special Adviser on rural development
The political profile of Enugu State Football Association Chairman, Hon. Tony Ugwu, has received a major boost following his appointment as Special Adviser on Rural Development by Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
Ugwu, a former Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, was appointed on Wednesday as part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen its administrative structure and accelerate development at the grassroots.
Reacting to the appointment, Ugwu expressed appreciation to Governor Mbah for the opportunity to serve in his administration.
“I thank God for the appointment, and more so, my gratitude goes to His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, for the opportunity to serve.”
The appointment is regarded as a recognition of Ugwu’s experience in public administration, community engagement and grassroots mobilisation, as well as his understanding of the challenges confronting rural communities across Enugu State.
Having previously served as a local government chairman, Ugwu brings considerable grassroots experience to his new role. His knowledge of local government administration and rural communities is expected to contribute to the state government’s efforts to extend its development programmes beyond major urban centres.
The new appointment also adds another chapter to Ugwu’s public service career. He has remained active in sports administration as Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association, where he has been involved in initiatives aimed at promoting football development and strengthening the sport’s structures across the state.
His new role, however, places him within the broader development framework of the Mbah administration, with responsibilities expected to include identifying rural development needs, facilitating grassroots interventions and working with relevant government agencies and stakeholders.
Ugwu’s appointment comes as the Enugu State Government pursues an ambitious development agenda focused on infrastructure, economic growth, human capital development and improved living conditions across the state.
For the former council chairman, the new assignment provides an opportunity to deploy his experience in grassroots administration and community engagement toward achieving tangible development outcomes.
Attention will now be focused on how Ugwu leverages his administrative experience and networks to support the government’s rural development initiatives and contribute to the transformation of communities across Enugu State.
His emergence as Special Adviser further broadens his role in the affairs of the state, taking him beyond football and local government administration into a strategic position within Enugu’s wider development architecture.
