Tems Triumphs Over Afrobeat Giants to Win Best African Music Performance at Grammy 2025

Nigerian singer Tems has made history once again, securing her second Grammy Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. 

She won the prestigious Best African Music Performance category for her hit single, Love Me JeJe, outshining top Afrobeat stars like Burna Boy, Asake, Wizkid, Yemi Alade, and the collaboration of Chris Brown, Davido, and Lojay.

Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, delivered an emotional acceptance speech, thanking God and her mother, whose birthday coincided with the occasion. 

She said, “Dear God, Thank You So Much For Putting Me On This Stage And Bringing Me This Team. Tomorrow Is My Mum’s Birthday, And This Is Her First Grammys. I Just Want To Thank You, Mum, Because She’s Really Done A Lot For Me And My Brother. I Want To Thank My Team—Thank You So Much. To God Be The Glory, Because Honestly, He’s Changed My Life So Much.”

Tems' rise to international recognition began in 2020 when she featured on Wizkid’s Essence, which later peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her collaborations with global stars like Drake (Fountains) and Future (Wait for U) only solidified her status as one of the most influential female artists in Africa. In 2023, she won her first Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her work on Wait for U.

Tems has continued to break boundaries. She covered Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, co-wrote Rihanna’s Lift Me Up, which earned nominations at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Grammys.

She also made history with her hit Free Mind, which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.In 2024, Tems released her debut album, Born in the Wild, which earned critical acclaim and a spot on global charts. At the Grammy 2025 Awards, she received three nominations:

  • Best African Music Performance (Love Me JeJe) – WINNER
  • Best R&B Song (Burning)
  • Best Global Music Album (Born in the Wild)

With two Grammy wins under her belt and a collection of prestigious awards including BET, NAACP Image, and Soul Train Music Awards, Tems continues to dominate the global music scene. Her success has solidified her place as one of Africa’s most celebrated and influential artists.
