Terem Moffi scores first Hamburger SV goal in dramatic five-goal thrilling comeback against Hoffenheim

Terem Moffi opened his Bundesliga scoring account for Hamburger SV with a crucial equaliser in their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over TSG Hoffenheim in a Matchday 5 encounter on Saturday evening.

The Nigerian striker came off the bench to score in the 83rd minute, cancelling out Hoffenheim’s advantage before Miro Muheim struck a stoppage-time winner to seal all three points for the visitors at the PreZero Arena.

Moffi’s goal was his first in five appearances since joining the Hanseatic club from OGC Nice, providing a timely boost for the Super Eagles forward as he looks to establish himself in the Bundesliga.

Introduced in the 76th minute for Martin Adeline, the 27-year-old initially thought he had helped Hamburger draw level when he set up Otto Stange. However, the effort was ruled out following a VAR review for a handball in the build-up.

The Nigerian eventually found the breakthrough seven minutes later. Rising to meet a cross from Muheim, Moffi powered a header low inside the right post to make it 2-2 and revive Hamburger’s hopes of completing the comeback.

Hamburger SV had made a promising start, with Yussuf Poulsen opening the scoring in the 12th minute.

However, Hoffenheim restored parity deep into first-half stoppage time when Sebastiaan Bornauw inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 45th minute plus five.

The hosts moved ahead eight minutes into the second half through Bambasé Conté, who collected a precise pass near the edge of the penalty area before firing a low effort that went in off the post.

Hoffenheim’s task became more difficult in the 64th minute when Bernardo received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the hosts with 10 men.

Hamburger capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Moffi’s 83rd-minute header restoring parity and setting up a tense finish.

Just when the contest appeared to be heading for a draw, Muheim emerged as the match-winner. In the 90th minute plus four, the midfielder met the ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a stunning first-time volley to complete the turnaround.

The late strike secured a memorable 3-2 away victory for Hamburger SV, with Moffi’s equaliser proving crucial to the comeback.

Having finally opened his account for the German club, the Nigerian forward will now be eager to build on the breakthrough and become an increasingly influential figure in Hamburger’s attack as the season progresses.
