Tobi Amusam shines at AFN trials, Badmus, Onyah claim 400m titles
World record holder Tobi Amusan underlined her dominance in the women’s 100m hurdles, cruising to victory at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The 28-year-old sprinted out of the blocks with characteristic power and precision, clocking 12.57 seconds to secure her fifth national title in the event.
Rising talent Adaobi Tabugbo finished second with a time of 13.03 seconds, while Faith Osamuyi came in third in 13.36 seconds.
Amusan’s commanding performance is a major boost as she gears up for the World Athletics Championships slated for September in Tokyo, Japan.
In the men’s 400m, Gafar Badmus emerged national champion, crossing the line in 45.71 seconds. He was followed by Ezekiel Asuquo in 46.29 seconds, while David Akhalu took third in 46.91 seconds.
The women’s 400m delivered a dramatic twist as multiple-time national champion Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the final. Capitalizing on the moment, African U-20 champion Favour Onyah stormed to victory in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna claimed second and third places, respectively.
The AFN Trials serve as a key selection event for Nigeria’s athletes ahead of major international competitions, including the upcoming World Championships.
