Top Nigerian athletes miss Commonwealth Games national trials amid visa challenges
Several of Nigeria's biggest track and field stars have been confirmed absent from the ongoing national trials for next Commonwealth Games, dealing a significant blow to the competition as athletes seek qualification opportunities ahead of major international events.
Among the notable names missing from the trials are Tobi Amusan, Kayinsola Ajayi, Israel Okon, Ese Brume, Samuel Ogazi, Rosemary Chukwuma, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Temitope Adeshina, and several others.
Sources indicate that many of the absent athletes are currently facing visa-related challenges, with some needing to renew their travel documents ahead of upcoming competitions and training commitments abroad.
The situation has been compounded by recent changes in U.S. visa policies, which have reportedly created additional hurdles for Nigerian athletes who regularly travel to the United States for training, competitions, and professional engagements.
Despite the high-profile absences, a number of athletes arrived at the trials on Friday morning and are expected to compete. Among them are Blessing Ogundiran, Adaobi Tabugbo, Chidi Okezie, and others.
The visa difficulties have raised concerns within Nigeria's athletics community, with stakeholders worried about the potential impact on athletes' preparation and participation in international competitions during a crucial period of the season.
Officials and athletes alike will be hoping for swift resolutions to the documentation challenges as Nigeria continues its preparations for upcoming global championships.
