World Athletics releases qualification standard for Beijing 2027 Championships
World Athletics has officially unveiled the qualification standards for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, outlining the performance marks athletes must achieve to secure automatic qualification for one of the sport’s biggest global events.
The announcement comes as athletes and national federations, including Nigeria’s Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), begin preparations for the championships with clear qualification targets now established across track and field disciplines.
In the sprint events, male athletes must run 9.95 seconds in the 100m and 20.07 seconds in the 200m to qualify automatically, while the women’s standards are set at 10.96 seconds and 22.45 seconds respectively.
For the 400m, the qualification marks stand at 44.45 seconds for men and 50.00 seconds for women.
Middle- and long-distance runners will also face demanding entry standards. Athletes competing in the men’s 1500m must clock 3:30.00, while women are required to run 3:58.00.
In the 5000m, the qualification times are 12:50.00 for men and 14:36.00 for women. Marathon runners must achieve times of 2:06:00 for men and 2:23:20 for women.
Field event athletes are also expected to meet elite-level benchmarks.
The men’s high jump qualifying height is set at 2.30m, while women must clear 1.96m. In the long jump, the standards are 8.25m for men and 6.86m for women.
In the throwing events, men must throw 85.50m in the javelin and 78.30m in the hammer throw, while women are required to record 63.40m and 74.00m respectively.
Combined event athletes aiming for qualification will need 8,620 points in the decathlon and 6,550 points in the heptathlon.
World Athletics confirmed that approximately 40 percent of athletes will qualify through the entry standards, while the remaining 60 percent will gain qualification through the world rankings system.
Qualification performances can be achieved between August 23, 2026, and August 22, 2027, at approved competitions classified as category C events or higher.
The newly released standards now provide Nigerian athletes with a clear roadmap as they intensify preparations for Beijing 2027 and aim to strengthen the country’s presence on the global athletics stage.
