Abia State set to host 2025 NWFL Championship
Women’s football action is heading to Abia State as the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) confirmed that this year’s championship will take place from September 11 to 21, 2025.
The Championship, the second tier of women’s club football in Nigeria, picks up from where the Premiership Super Six left off earlier this year in Ikenne, promising another exciting chapter in the league’s 2025 calendar.
Seventeen clubs have already signed up to battle for promotion. They’ll be split into four groups, with only the winners from each group guaranteed a ticket to the top flight of the NWFL Premiership for the 2025/26 season.
Announcing the news on Monday, August 18, NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, assured fans and players that the competition will be run with the highest standards of fairness.
“We want to assure all participating teams that the Championship will be conducted under the highest standards of fair play, with a level playing ground for everyone involved,” Shabi said. “Our commitment is to ensure that the competition reflects the values of transparency, integrity, and sporting excellence.”
Teams are expected to arrive in Abia on September 11, with the draws and pre-match meetings scheduled for the following day. The first round of fixtures kicks off September 13 and will run until the grand finale on September 21, with rest days included to allow players to recover.
The Abiriba Stadium and Umuahia Township Stadium will serve as host grounds, setting the stage for nine days of competitive football and the dreams of promotion.
