Rita Ferdinand leads Nigeria's medal surge at World Para Powerlifting Championships
Nigeria’s dominance in para powerlifting shone brightly once again as Rita Ferdinand, Esther Nworgu, and Rukayat Opeyemi Ajiboye claimed gold, silver, and bronze respectively at the ongoing 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
Ferdinand powered her way to the top of the podium on Saturday, lifting an incredible 153kg to secure gold in the women’s up to 79kg category, a performance that further cemented Nigeria’s reputation as a global powerhouse in the sport.
Her triumph added to Nigeria’s growing medal tally after Nworgu had earlier captured silver in the 50kg category, narrowly missing gold to Venezuela’s Clara Fuentes in a fiercely contested showdown. Ajiboye also earned bronze in the same class, ensuring a clean sweep of podium finishes for the Nigerian team.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade hailed the athletes for their outstanding performances and patriotic spirit.
“Our athletes continue to make us proud, showing the world that Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with in para powerlifting,” Olopade said. “Their bright start in Cairo reflects the depth of talent, discipline, and dedication that define Nigerian sports. The NSC remains steadfast in providing the necessary support to ensure our champions keep soaring.”
The ongoing championship, which runs from October 9 to 18, marks a historic first, being the inaugural edition hosted on African soil. The Cairo event stands as a major milestone for the continent, spotlighting Africa’s growing commitment to developing adaptive and inclusive sports.
Team Nigeria’s contingent had departed in two batches last week, amid cheers and high hopes from officials, fans, and supporters. The National Sports Commission had expressed full confidence in the athletes’ preparation and determination to uphold Nigeria’s rich legacy in the sport.
As the 10-day event progresses, expectations are high for more podium finishes, with several Nigerian lifters yet to take the stage. The team’s strong start in Cairo has once again underlined Nigeria’s unmatched pedigree in para powerlifting, a legacy built on resilience, excellence, and national pride.
