Ademola Lookman's strike seals Super Eagles winning start at AFCON 2025
Ademola Lookman struck a decisive second-half winner as Nigeria opened their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Fes.
The Super Eagles dominated the early exchanges and took a deserved lead nine minutes before half-time when defender Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home Alex Iwobi’s teasing cross from close range.
Tanzania, however, stunned Nigeria shortly after the restart. Five minutes into the second half, Charles M’Mobwa beat a poorly set offside trap before calmly finishing past Stanley Nwabali to bring the Taifa Stars level.
Three-time African champions Nigeria were not fazed by the setback and restored their advantage almost immediately. Lookman showed quick feet to turn his marker before unleashing a fierce left-footed strike that flew into the top corner.
The Super Eagles were then forced to withstand late pressure from a spirited Tanzanian side but held firm to secure a vital three points in their opening Group match.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to Saturday’s clash with Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles as they look to build momentum in the group stage.
