Plateau United Queens clinch maiden NAWFA League title in Jos
Plateau United Queens became the first champions of the NAWFA League in Jos. They won the title after a tense final against Joy K. Angels, which ended 1-1. The match went to penalties, where Plateau Queens scored four and Joy K. Angels three to secure the trophy. Both teams had finished with 12 points at the top of their groups, creating a competitive and exciting final.
Ten teams took part in the first NAWFA League, held over five days. The tournament showcased new talents from Northern Nigeria and marked a significant step forward for women’s football in the region.
After the match, Moses Bako, the interim chairman of NAWFA, expressed pride in organizing the tournament successfully. He praised everyone involved for their hard work and dedication. Bako said, “We are grateful for the safe and smooth run of the competition. We thank God for guiding us through the process without serious problems or injuries.”
He also thanked the Plateau Football Association for their support and hospitality. Bako noted their efforts to seek government help and support for the event. Volunteers and individuals who helped make the tournament possible received special thanks. He mentioned Ceemonie and Sarah Nnodim Ikechukwu for their personal contributions, calling their help invaluable.
Bako highlighted the tournament’s success in spotting new talent. He announced that seven players had already caught the attention of three Nigerian Women’s Football League clubs. The event proved to be a good platform for young players to showcase their skills.
Finally, Bako called for everyone to celebrate their achievements. He expressed optimism about the future of women’s football in Northern Nigeria. The organisation of this first NAWFA League is a big step towards growing women’s football in the region, and plans are already in motion for an even larger second edition.
