Blessing Ogundiran blazes to NAIA record, announces arrival on global sprint stage
Nigeria’s Blessing Ogundiran delivered a statement performance at the South Florida Invitational, storming to victory in the women’s 100m with a remarkable 10.98 seconds to set a new NAIA record.
In a competition decided by timed finals across multiple heats, Ogundiran left no room for doubt. Running in Heat 1, she produced the fastest time of the day under legal wind conditions, eclipsing her previous personal best of 11.21s in emphatic fashion and finishing top overall.
Her stunning run not only secured victory but also placed her among an elite group, as she becomes one of just two women worldwide to dip below the 11-second mark in 2026. The time stands as the joint-fastest in the world this season and currently leads the Nigerian charts.
Behind her, UCF’s Eseroghene Awusa clocked 11.40s to finish second, while Boston University’s Jada Smith posted 11.57s for third place. Smith’s teammate, Ijeoma Ezechukwu, followed closely in fourth with 11.58s, and Southeastern University’s Olga Gomez rounded out the top five in 11.63s.
Beyond the victory, the significance of Ogundiran’s performance continues to resonate. Her 10.98s effort moves her into eighth place on Nigeria’s all-time 100m list, firmly establishing her among the country’s sprinting elite.
While several athletes impressed across the heats, none could match the Nigerian’s explosive pace, as she dominated the field with a clear margin at the top.
Having shown steady progress from the indoor season into the outdoor campaign, Ogundiran’s latest feat signals more than just a personal milestone it marks her emergence as one of Nigeria’s most exciting rising stars on the global sprint scene.
