Amy Okonkwo earns fresh shot with Dallas Wings ahead of 2026 WNBA season

Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo has been handed another opportunity to prove her worth in the WNBA after the Dallas Wings announced her signing to a training camp contract ahead of the 2026 season.

The D’Tigress forward joins a group of new additions, including Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu, Costanza Verona, and Shyanne Sellers, as the franchise begins early preparations for the new campaign.

Okonkwo’s return to Dallas comes on the back of a solid debut stint last season. Initially brought in on consecutive seven-day hardship contracts, the 29-year-old did enough to earn an extension through to the end of the season. She went on to deliver impressive numbers, averaging 11.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.8 assists per game, an all-around contribution that underlined her value on both ends of the floor.

Her latest call-up places her firmly in contention for a roster spot as the Wings look to bounce back from a difficult 2025 season. Dallas endured a challenging campaign, finishing the bottom of the Western Conference, with injuries to key personnel, including star guard Arike Ogunbowale, derailing their progress.

With Ogunbowale retained and expectations reset, the Wings are aiming for a stronger showing in 2026. Their preseason schedule includes fixtures against the Indiana Fever on May 1 and the Las Vegas Aces on May 4, before they tip off their regular season against Indiana on May 9.

For Okonkwo, this training camp deal is more than just another contract it is a renewed opportunity to cement her place in the league after an encouraging first impression in Dallas colours.
