Chibueze Oputa relishes maiden Super Eagles call-up, vows to make Nigeria proud

Chibueze Oputa has expressed gratitude after receiving his first-ever invitation to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup tournament scheduled to hold in London later this month.

The Rangers International FC defender earned a place in coach Éric Chelle’s 27-man squad following a string of impressive performances in the Nigeria Premier Football League this season.

Oputa has been one of the standout players for Rangers during their title challenge, playing a crucial role in a defensive unit that has conceded just 26 goals throughout the campaign.

Reacting to the invitation via his social media account, the highly-rated fullback thanked the Nigeria Football Federation for the opportunity and pledged to represent the country with pride.

“Thank you to the Nigeria Football Federation for the opportunity. Forever grateful. Time to make the country proud,” Oputa wrote.

The defender will now hope to make his senior debut during the four-nation Unity Cup tournament, which features Nigeria, Zimbabwe, India and Jamaica.

Nigeria will begin their campaign against Zimbabwe national football team in the first semi-final on May 26 at The Valley in Charlton, London.

Victory for the Super Eagles would secure a place in the final against either India national football team or Jamaica national football team, who meet in the second semi-final.
