D'Tigers crush Rwanda to seal perfect Qualifying window, reach Second Round
Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, produced a dominant display on Sunday, thrashing Rwanda 106-62 to complete an unbeaten qualifying window and book a place in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.
The emphatic victory capped a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria, who won all three games during the qualifying window after earlier edging Tunisia and Guinea. The flawless run signals a revival for the team under head coach David Fizdale.
Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu orchestrated the victory with a brilliant all-round performance, finishing with 17 points and seven assists. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and Stan Okoye each contributed 13 points as D’Tigers combined sharp offensive execution with disciplined defending to overwhelm Rwanda.
Nigeria seized control from the opening quarter and never looked back, dominating both ends of the floor in one of their most convincing victories in recent years. The result also completed an impressive response from a team that entered the window under pressure to keep its World Cup qualification hopes alive.
D’Tigers opened their campaign with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia. Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu led the scoring with 17 points apiece, Wes Iwundu added 14, while Uche Iroegbu chipped in with 13 to secure a crucial opening win.
Nigeria then followed up with a dramatic 80-79 comeback triumph against Guinea. Caleb Agada starred with 22 points, Uche Iroegbu added 14, and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu contributed 10 as D’Tigers rallied from a late deficit to claim a second consecutive victory.
The commanding win over Rwanda completed a perfect qualifying window, underlining the team's resilience, improved chemistry and consistent execution across all three matches.
Under Fizdale’s leadership, D’Tigers showed growing cohesion throughout the campaign, with experienced players and emerging talents blending seamlessly to deliver disciplined performances on both offence and defence.
The three consecutive victories have significantly boosted Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup while restoring confidence after a difficult start to the qualification campaign.
With the opening phase successfully completed, D’Tigers will now turn their attention to the second round of the African qualifiers, where tougher opposition awaits as they continue their quest for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
