Warri Wolves, Yobe Desert Stars take giant strides in NNL Super 8 Playoffs

Warri Wolves and Yobe Desert Stars emerged as the biggest winners on Matchday Two of the ongoing Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight playoffs, currently holding at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.

In the Southern Conference, Warri Wolves bounced back from their opening day defeat with a dominant 3-0 win over Kun Khalifat. The Warri-based side got off to a flying start with an early goal in the 2nd minute, doubled their lead in the 38th, and sealed the win in the 68th minute through veteran Efe Yarhere, 43, who added the third to complete the rout.

The emphatic win helped Wolves recover from their 1-0 loss to Osun United on Saturday and placed them firmly back in contention for a top-two finish.

Meanwhile, in the second Southern Conference clash, Osun United salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw against Crown FC of Ogbomoso. Wasiu Falolu had given Crown the lead in the 56th minute, capitalizing on their bright start to the second half. However, their hopes of holding on for a vital three points took a hit when Osun’s Lekan Gabriel was shown a straight red card just four minutes later for a reckless challenge.

Despite being down to 10 men, Osun United refused to give up and were rewarded deep into stoppage time when Nurideen Abolude struck in the 95th minute to snatch a crucial point.

With two games played, Osun United now top the Southern Conference standings with four points. Warri Wolves and Kun Khalifat are tied on three points each, while Crown FC sit bottom with just one point from two matches.

In the Northern Conference, Yobe Desert Stars of Damaturu claimed a significant 2-1 comeback win over Doma United to pick up their first victory of the tournament. Doma had taken the lead in the 17th minute through John Zakka and held the advantage into the break. But Yobe found a response in the second half, equalizing through Yakubu Abdullahi in the 58th minute.

The decisive moment came in the 85th minute when Umar Idris fired home the winner, completing the comeback and sending Yobe to the top of the table with four points from two matches.

Doma United, who drew their opening match, now sit bottom of the Northern Conference with one point.

In the group’s other fixture, Barau FC and Wikki Tourists played out a goalless draw, with both sides struggling to create clear chances. The result leaves both teams on two points apiece after two consecutive draws Barau having earlier held Yobe, while Wikki drew with Doma on Matchday One.

As the final round of group matches approaches, all eight teams remain mathematically in contention for promotion. With just two spots available in each conference, the stage is set for a dramatic finish to the NNL Super Eight, as clubs battle for a coveted place in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
