Chukwuebuka Enekwechi clinches gold, Tobi Amusan settles for bronze at 2026 Commonwealth Games
Team Nigeria enjoyed another outstanding outing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered a historic gold medal in the men's shot put, while Tobi Amusan claimed bronze and several Nigerian athletes booked places in key finals.
Enekwechi emerged as the star of the day after producing a brilliant fifth-round throw of 21.07m to clinch the men's shot put title.
The victory saw the Nigerian co captain finally realise his long awaited Commonwealth Games dream, edging New Zealand's Tom Walsh to secure Nigeria's eighth gold medal of the Games.
On the track, world record holder Tobi Amusan added another medal to her impressive collection by finishing third in the women's 100m hurdles final.
The Nigerian crossed the line in 12.60 seconds to win bronze, behind Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas, who struck gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica's Megan Simmons settled for silver in 12.41 seconds.
Nigeria's dominance in the men's 400m continued as Samuel Ogazi produced a sensational performance in the semifinals. Ogazi stormed to victory in 44.52 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest 400m semifinal ever run at the Commonwealth Games.
Edidiong Udo also secured his place in the final after being promoted from third to second in his semifinal following the disqualification of Jamaica's Antonio Watson. Udo's official time of 45.55 seconds means Nigeria will have two athletes contesting one of the Games' most anticipated finals.
In the men's 200m, Udodi Onwuzurike kept Nigeria's sprint medal hopes alive by qualifying for the final with a superb run of 20.22 seconds, finishing just behind Jamaica's Christopher Taylor, who won the semifinal in 20.20 seconds.
Attention now shifts to the women's 400m final, where Ella Onojuvwevwo will be among the leading contenders for a podium finish.
The Nigerian quarter miler, whose personal best of 49.47 seconds ranks among the world's fastest this season, will be aiming to convert her impressive form into a Commonwealth medal.

Schlueter remained firmly in medal contention after an impressive opening day. The Nigerian sits fourth overall with 4,196 points after strong performances across the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m events.
Meanwhile, Unyima Uwak impressed in the women's T47 100m final, finishing fifth while recording a season's best time of 12.63 seconds.
With another gold medal secured, multiple athletes advancing to finals and several medal opportunities still ahead, Team Nigeria continues to build momentum as it pushes for a strong finish on the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medal table.
