Nigeria’s Yellow Greens will begin their campaign at the maiden Nigeria Cricket Federation Quadrangular T20 tournament against Ghana on Monday at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos.

The opening encounter is scheduled for 10am, with Nigeria’s other representative side, Nigeria A, set to face Sierra Leone in the second match of the day.

The inaugural competition features three countries and four teams, with hosts Nigeria fielding two sides as part of efforts by the Nigeria Cricket Federation to strengthen the country’s domestic and international cricket calendar. 

Nigeria head into the Ghana clash with a strong recent record against their West African neighbours, having won all five previous meetings between the two countries since 2019.

Three of those encounters were played in Lagos, while the other two took place in Kampala and Rwanda, according to statistics cited from ESPNcricinfo. 

The tournament also represents an important preparation platform for the Yellow Greens ahead of their upcoming international assignments.

Particular attention will be on Nigeria’s preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier, which is scheduled to hold in Abuja from October 18 to 25.

The national team has been working under new high-performance manager Stephen Mangongo, who was appointed in May on a three-year contract with the Nigeria Cricket Federation.

The Zimbabwean replaced Kenyan coach Steve Tikolo, who departed earlier in 2026 after more than three years in charge of the national team.

The quadrangular tournament will be Mangongo’s second assignment with Nigeria following the team’s participation in the Namibia Tri-Series in June. 

Beyond the opening fixtures, the competition is designed as a round-robin tournament, with the four participating teams scheduled to face one another twice.

The team that accumulates the best record across the series will be crowned champion next Sunday.

The tournament offers Nigeria an opportunity to test players, build match fitness and assess the squad ahead of more demanding international engagements.

The Ghana fixture will therefore provide the Yellow Greens with an early opportunity to measure their progress under Mangongo while continuing their recent dominance in the head-to-head meetings between the two West African sides.

With Nigeria also represented by a second team, the tournament is expected to provide wider exposure for players while giving the national selectors additional options ahead of future international assignments.
