The 23rd African Fencing Championships kicked off at Charterhouse Lagos on Wednesday, June 25, with Egypt securing the tournament’s first gold medal, reaffirming their dominance in the continental sport.
Host nation Nigeria’s team delivered a spirited performance, led by promising talents Wisdom Okanlawon and siblings Mahadi and Mahathir Idongesit, who advanced to the knockout stages of the Men’s Individual Épée event. Veteran Adegbola Babade also reached the round of 32, showcasing the depth of Nigerian fencing.
Despite their impressive efforts, all Nigerian fencers were eventually eliminated by more experienced opponents. Mahathir Idongesit, who narrowly lost to World Junior Champion Mahmoud El-Sayed in the round of 32, expressed optimism: “I’m thrilled to have fenced against one of the best in the world. It was a close contest, and I enjoyed every moment. This experience has boosted my confidence and will stay with me for a long time.”
In a goodwill message, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, praised the Nigeria Fencing Federation and the International Fencing Federation (FIE) for choosing Nigeria as host.
“This glorious competition, featuring over 200 athletes from 26 countries including Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, and Senegal, is a spectacular display of skill and sportsmanship,” Fatodu said. “I welcome you all to Nigeria, the most populous Black nation in the world, and to Lagos, a city known for its vibrant spirit.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also highlighted plans for fencing to serve broader social goals. “The Nigerian Fencing Federation and FIE are exploring a partnership with UNICEF to leverage fencing for youth empowerment, child protection, poverty alleviation, and economic opportunities for athletes,” he stated.
The championships continue to promote both sporting excellence and social development across Africa.
