Ekiti Decides 2026: Governor Oyebanji Sweeps 16 Councils to Break Re-election Jinx
Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a historic re-election victory in the Ekiti State governorship election, winning all 16 local government areas to become the first incumbent governor in the state’s history to earn a second consecutive mandate.
The official results announced by the Returning Officer, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, showed Oyebanji comprehensively defeated his challengers, Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recording victories in every council area across the state.
The emphatic triumph breaks a political pattern that had endured since Ekiti State was created in 1996, with previous governors unable to secure re-election while in office.
Oyebanji also became only the second governorship candidate to achieve a clean sweep of all local government areas in an Ekiti election, matching the feat accomplished by former governor Ayodele Fayose in 2014.
Dominant Performance Across the State
The governor’s strongest showing came in Ado Local Government Area, where he polled 38,026 votes, comfortably ahead of PDP candidate Oluyede, who secured 3,817 votes, while ADC’s Bejide received 1,054 votes.
He also posted commanding figures across several key councils, including: Irepodun/Ifelodun – 29,278 votes; Ekiti West – 28,258 votes; Ikole – 26,508 votes; Ekiti East – 26,359 votes; Ijero – 25,506 votes
Oyebanji completed his statewide sweep with victories in Moba, Oye, Ido/Osi, Ayekire, Ise/Orun, Ikere, Emure, Efon, and Ilejemeje local government areas.
Opposition Candidates Lose Home Bases
One of the most notable aspects of the election was the governor’s success in the home territories of his main opponents.
PDP candidate Wole Oluyede was defeated in his native Ikere Local Government Area, where Oyebanji polled 11,116 votes compared with Oluyede’s 9,872 votes.
Similarly, ADC flagbearer Dare Bejide failed to secure victory in Ekiti South-West Local Government Area, his political base, as Oyebanji amassed 14,705 votes against Bejide’s 1,076 votes.
The comprehensive victory further consolidates Oyebanji’s political standing and provides the APC administration with a renewed mandate to continue its governance agenda over the next four years.
