INEC Fixes June 20 for Bye-Elections, Swears in New National Commissioner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed June 20, 2026, for the conduct of bye-elections in six states, in what marks a key step in preparations for upcoming off-cycle polls.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the date during a ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where a new National Commissioner, Jamila Malafa (retd.), was also formally received.

Bye-Elections to Hold Alongside Ekiti Governorship Poll

Amupitan disclosed that the bye-elections will be conducted on the same day as the Ekiti State Governorship Election 2026.

“The Ekiti State Governorship Election is scheduled for June 20, 2026. On the same date, the Commission will conduct bye-elections to fill vacant seats,” he said.

According to INEC, the elections will cover senatorial vacancies in Enugu State, Nasarawa State, Rivers State, and Ondo State.

In addition, voters will elect representatives for a State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State and a House of Representatives seat in Kano State.

New National Commissioner Assumes Duty

The Commission also welcomed Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (retd.) as a National Commissioner, with Amupitan describing her as a seasoned professional bringing valuable military, legal, and administrative experience.

He noted her previous contributions to electoral logistics and her role as Director of Legal Services in the Nigerian Navy as key assets to the Commission.

Commitment to Credible Elections

Reaffirming INEC’s mandate, the Chairman stressed the Commission’s dedication to delivering credible and transparent elections across all levels.

“Our responsibility is clear. We are committed to conducting elections into the offices of the President, National Assembly, Governors, State Houses of Assembly and Area Councils in a credible and transparent manner,” Amupitan stated.

Malafa Pledges Support

In her remarks, Malafa expressed appreciation for her appointment and pledged to support the Commission’s work.

“I look forward to working with everyone for the development and stability of our country, and for the success of forthcoming elections,” she said.

The event drew attendance from National Commissioners, senior INEC officials, the leadership of The Electoral Institute, and family members of the new appointee, underscoring the significance of the occasion as preparations for the June 20 polls gather momentum.
