The inaugural National Intermediate Games, earlier scheduled to hold in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, have been postponed to the first quarter of 2027.

The postponement is aimed at allowing additional preparations and ensuring that the maiden edition is delivered to a world-class standard befitting a major national sporting event.

The decision was formally communicated by the Lagos State Sports Commission to the National Sports Commission (NSC) following a comprehensive review of preparations by the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.

The review followed the Joint Technical Meeting held from September 3 to 6, 2026, where stakeholders assessed the state of readiness for the Games.

According to the NSC, the assessment covered proposed sporting facilities, events, technical requirements, rules and regulations, as well as other critical operational areas required for a successful hosting.

Although the review established that the Games could technically proceed as scheduled, it concluded that the remaining preparation window might not be sufficient to deliver the inaugural edition at the desired standard.

The decision to postpone the Games is therefore intended to protect the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to establish an operational benchmark for subsequent editions.

Lagos State, as host, has reaffirmed its commitment to staging the inaugural Games and will continue preparations in collaboration with the NSC and other stakeholders.

A new date within the first quarter of 2027 will be finalised by the Local Organising Committee in due course.

Despite the postponement, the NSC said its programme towards the Games would continue as previously planned.

This includes accreditation, zonal elimination for team sports and other technical and operational activities within the immediate purview of the Commission.

The National Intermediate Games are designed to provide an important platform for identifying and developing emerging sporting talents while strengthening the pipeline for Nigeria’s future sporting programmes.

The postponement is expected to provide organisers with additional time to address outstanding requirements and ensure that the first edition establishes a strong foundation for the sustainability and growth of the Games.
