Europa League surge for Nigerian duo Ola Aina, Terem Moffi, and Zaidu Sanusi into last eight
Nigeria’s growing influence in European club football was on full display as Super Eagles stars Ola Aina, Terem Moffi and Zaidu Sanusi all sealed places in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League, underlining the country’s rising pedigree on the continental stage.
The night carried a mix of drama, resilience, and dominance, with each player contributing differently to their club’s progression. In England, Nottingham Forest staged a spirited comeback against FC Midtjylland.
After suffering a 1-0 defeat at home in the first leg, Forest overturned the deficit with a 2-1 victory in the return fixture, forcing penalties. A composed 3-0 shootout triumph sealed their passage, with Aina introduced from the bench to help stabilize the team during the decisive encounter.
In Portugal, Moffi’s FC Porto showed their European pedigree with a commanding performance over VfB Stuttgart. Having already made his mark with a goal in Germany, the Nigerian forward featured throughout the second leg as Porto secured a 2-1 win away from home, completing a convincing 4-1 aggregate victory.
His consistency across both legs proved vital in Porto’s smooth progression. Sanusi also played his part for the Portuguese giants, coming on as a late first half substitute to reinforce the side’s defensive structure.
His inclusion highlighted his importance within a squad pushing for both domestic and continental success.
However, it was not all celebration for Nigerian talents. Newly invited Super Eagles winger Yira Sor endured a difficult outing as his club KRC Genk suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to SC Freiburg, crashing out 5-2 on aggregate.
Sor featured as a second half substitute but could not alter the outcome in what turned out to be a one-sided contest.
With three Nigerians advancing and one bowing out, the quarterfinal lineup reflects both the promise and competitiveness of Nigerian players in Europe.
As the tournament intensifies, attention will now shift to whether Aina, Moffi, and Sanusi can push even further and keep Nigeria’s flag flying deep into the latter stages of the competition.
