Flamingos depart for WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Cote D'Ivoire on Monday
Nigeria’s Flamingos will depart the country on Monday for Côte d’Ivoire to compete in the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, with the team receiving words of encouragement from Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, ahead of their continental assignment.
Ikpeme visited the Flamingos’ camp on Saturday, where he charged the players to remain focused and give their best in representing Nigeria at the tournament.
The NFF chief encouraged the young players to approach the competition with determination, discipline and the desire to make the country proud.
The Flamingos are scheduled to leave Nigeria on Monday as they begin their journey to Côte d’Ivoire for the regional championship.
Nigeria has been drawn in Group B alongside Ghana, Togo and Niger, setting up a demanding group-stage campaign for the five-time FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup bronze medallists.
The WAFU-B tournament will provide valuable competitive exposure for the Flamingos as they continue their development at age-group level and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Nigeria’s opening fixture is against Ghana on Wednesday, September 16, at the CKB Stadium in Côte d’Ivoire.
The regional tournament is also expected to serve as an important preparatory platform for the participating teams as they build towards the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
With the squad now set to leave the country, the Flamingos will be hoping to translate their preparations into strong performances and begin their campaign on a positive note.
Ikpeme’s visit to camp offered the players an additional morale boost as they prepare to fly the Nigerian flag in Côte d’Ivoire.
The young Nigerians will now turn their attention fully to the competition, with the technical crew expected to focus on tactical preparation, player development and securing a strong start against Ghana.
