Nigeria Supporters Club leadership crisis deepens as Interim Committee exceeds one-year mandate
Nigeria’s football supporters clubs are still waiting for the elected leadership promised to them, as an interim arrangement originally designed to last 12 months has stretched to about 19 months.
The five club presidents leading the Unification and Interim Management Committee (IMC) for Nigerian Football and Sports Groups are facing growing criticism over their failure to complete the mandate assigned to them — uniting the country’s fragmented supporters clubs, restructuring the organisation and conducting elections for a substantive executive.
The committee’s authority is based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that came into effect on February 13, 2025. The agreement provided for a one-year tenure and stated that the period could not be renewed or extended under any circumstances.
That deadline expired on February 13, 2026, without the transition being completed. Seven months later, in September 2026, no election has been held, no unified executive has been installed and no comprehensive account of the committee’s stewardship has been presented to stakeholders.
The same five presidents therefore remain in charge well beyond the period originally provided for under the agreement.
In response to criticism, the IMC has pointed to the separate registration of supporters clubs with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), arguing that the different legal identities have made the proposed unification more complicated.
The committee has also cited the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup as one of the factors that affected its activities.
However, critics have questioned both explanations, arguing that resolving administrative and legal complications was part of the reason an interim body was established in the first place. They have also questioned the relevance of the national team’s World Cup qualification campaign to the organisation of an internal election.
Further frustration has been generated by what stakeholders describe as contradictory statements from the IMC.
In one communication, the committee announced plans to establish a Constitutional Drafting Committee and an Electoral Committee, creating the impression that preparations for the long-awaited election were finally beginning.
Less than 48 hours later, however, another statement indicated that the IMC would await further directives from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) before determining the next steps.
The conflicting positions have raised questions over why an electoral process was announced before the committee was ready to proceed with it.
Critics have also questioned whether the five presidents should be the ones effectively assessing their own performance after exceeding the agreed tenure.
According to the argument, the IMC was given a defined mandate and a fixed timeframe. With both the timeline and key objectives unmet, stakeholders are demanding accountability rather than further justification for the committee’s continued existence.
They are calling for an independent assessment of the IMC’s activities over the past 18 months, a transparent account of the decisions taken during the period and a clearly defined timetable for the emergence of democratically elected leadership.
Among the key questions demanding answers are why the election was not conducted within the agreed period, why a promised transition report has not been presented, what specifically prevented the committee from completing its one-year assignment and, most importantly, the basis on which it has continued to operate beyond the expiration of its mandate.
For many supporters, an interim committee is expected to provide a temporary bridge to a permanent and democratically elected structure — not evolve into a permanent leadership arrangement.
With the original deadline now long expired, pressure is mounting on the IMC to provide clarity, accept accountability and set a definitive path towards elections and the restoration of elected leadership in Nigeria’s supporters clubs.
