Oyibu books 200m final ticket as Ezechukwu sets new Personal Best in Eugene
Team Nigeria’s impressive run at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene gathered further momentum as Success Oyibu powered into the women’s 200m final, while Miracle Ezechukwu produced a stunning personal best in the semifinals.
Oyibu delivered a confident performance to win her semifinal in 23.13 seconds, securing an automatic place in the championship final.
The Nigerian sprinter held off South Africa’s Rume Burger, who finished second in 23.18 seconds, to emerge as the heat winner and strengthen her medal ambitions ahead of the final.
Ezechukwu was equally impressive in her semifinal, clocking a new personal best of 22.61 seconds to finish second.
The remarkable run represents another significant milestone for the young Nigerian, who has continued to make her presence felt throughout the championships. Her place in the final, however, is still subject to the official qualification decision.
Ezechukwu has already played a crucial role in Nigeria’s campaign in Eugene, anchoring the mixed 4x100m relay team to a Nigerian U20 record of 41.91 seconds and helping the quartet qualify for the final.
The latest sprint exploits add to an encouraging championship for Nigeria, following Jessica Oji’s historic triumph in the women’s shot put. Oji became the first Nigerian athlete to win a global field event title at any level after securing gold.
With Oyibu already confirmed for the 200m final and Ezechukwu awaiting official confirmation, Team Nigeria’s emerging sprint stars have provided further evidence of the country’s growing strength on the international athletics stage.
