International Day of the Girl Child 2026: Sapphire Nigeria Women Football Supporters Club champions end to child marriage
The 2026 International Day of the Girl Child will take on added significance as the Sapphire Nigeria Women Football Supporters Club marks the occasion with a strong call to end child marriage and invest in the rights and future of girls.
Tagged “End Child Marriage & Invest In Girls Right,” the event is scheduled to hold on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at the Lagos Anglican Grammar School, Surulere, Lagos, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Honourable Gbolahan Lawanson will serve as the Father of the Day, while Honourable Barakat Bakare Odunuga will be the Mother of the Day.
The programme will also feature distinguished guests of honour, including the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Mojisola Meranda, and the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Honourable Bolaji Ogunlende (RAK).
Other notable guests of honour include the SSA to the President on Community Engagement, Honourable Moremi Ojudu; music minister Ernieola Olusoga; lawyer and founder of Herizon Sports Initiative, Ibidoyin Aina; as well as representatives of Reliable Electrics Nigeria Limited and Irise Elevator & Escalators Nigeria Limited, Mr. Onyejekwe Nnaemeka.
Beyond marking the International Day of the Girl Child, the event will also provide a platform to celebrate achievements in women's football. It will hold alongside the 2026 Soccer Queens Awards, where outstanding women's football players and officials will be recognised and honoured for their contributions to the development of the sport.
The organisers say the dual celebration is expected to bring together stakeholders from sports, education, government and the wider community to spotlight the rights, opportunities and potential of girls while celebrating women who continue to make an impact in football.
