Ronald Koeman hails Morocco's rise as Atlas Lions knock Netherlands out of FIFA World Cup 2026

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has applauded Morocco’s remarkable progress on the world stage, describing the Atlas Lions as a symbol of African football’s growing tactical strength and quality.

Koeman made the remarks after Morocco eliminated the Netherlands in a dramatic Round of 32 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, prevailing in a tense penalty shootout to secure a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Canada.

Reflecting on the tournament, the Dutch manager acknowledged the significant strides made by African teams in recent years.

"It’s very clear watching this World Cup that African teams have greatly improved in a tactical sense, and also in the way they play their matches," Koeman said.

He reserved special praise for Morocco, highlighting the country's consistent production of top-class young talent capable of thriving at Europe’s biggest clubs.

"Morocco is the country that, in terms of talents, really generates good players, young players that continue to join the major clubs in Europe. It’s not without a reason why they have a higher ranking than the Netherlands," he added.

Morocco’s victory over the Dutch further showcased their resilience, composure, and growing reputation as one of international football’s emerging forces. Holding their nerve in the penalty shootout, the Atlas Lions booked a last-16 showdown with Canada as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.

The result also reinforces Morocco’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations, extending a run of impressive performances that has seen them consistently challenge traditional powerhouses and establish themselves as genuine contenders on the global stage.
