Kano State Government declares Monday as Public holiday for bereaved athletes

Governor Yusuf has proclaimed Monday as a public holiday to express sympathy for the families of the bereaved Kano athletes.

 

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has conveyed profound sorrow and offered sincere condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in an auto accident that resulted in 22 fatalities and numerous serious injuries.

 

The victims, predominantly young individuals, were returning home as part of Kano’s delegation from the National Sports Festival.

 

In a statement released by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the state has designated Monday, 2nd June, as a public holiday to show sympathy towards the families of the victims.

 

“On behalf of the Government and the citizens of Kano State, we wish to express our heartfelt condolences regarding the unfortunate incident that befell the courageous members of the Kano team on their return journey along the Kano–Zaria expressway.”

 

The statement further noted that the delegation included athletes, coaches, and officials who represented the state in various sporting events at the recently concluded National Sports Festival.

 

“It is with a heavy heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which resulted in the loss of 22 innocent lives and left many others injured,” the Governor remarked.

 

“On behalf of the government and the citizens of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We grieve with you and share in your sorrow.”

 

Governor Yusuf characterized the tragedy as a somber moment for the entire state and urged for calm and unity during this challenging time.

 

He assured that all necessary measures are being taken to assist the victims and their families.

 

While His Excellency is currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj Operation, he has instructed that Monday, 2nd June 2025, be observed as a public holiday for the people of Kano to pray and express sympathy for the families of the victims.

 

The state also urges Imams and all Muslims within and outside Kano to pray for the souls of the departed.
