Lekan Fatodu confirmed as Nigeria Acquatics Federation President after Abuja by-election
Board members of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAF) have reaffirmed Mr. Lekan Fatodu as the new President of the federation following a by-election held in Abuja.
Fatodu, who currently serves as Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, secured a decisive 10–1 victory in a poll supervised and endorsed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), formally confirming his emergence as federation president.
The by-election became necessary following the death of the federation’s former president, Chamberlain Dunkwu, whose passing was described by board members as a major loss to the aquatic sports community.
Following the announcement of results, members of the federation’s board expressed confidence in Fatodu’s leadership, highlighting his experience in sports administration and his capacity to drive reform and development within aquatic sports in Nigeria.
With the outcome of the election, Fatodu is set to serve a four-year term as President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation.
In his acceptance speech, Fatodu thanked stakeholders in the swimming and aquatic sports community, as well as the leadership of the NSC, for the confidence placed in him.
“I am very happy today that we are all making history together, both at the level of the swimming family and the country’s sports sector at large,” he said.
He also commended the leadership of the NSC, particularly Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for what he described as their efforts to raise standards across Nigerian sports.
According to him, ongoing reforms and policy direction from the commission have contributed significantly to the transformation of the sports sector.
Fatodu pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him, promising to focus on building a sustainable and economically viable aquatics ecosystem in Nigeria.
He said his administration would prioritize athlete development, improved competition standards, and broader participation in aquatic sports nationwide, marking what stakeholders describe as a new phase for the federation.
