MFM reclaim NBBF/Zenith Bank Basketball League title after overtime thriller
MFM Women’s Basketball team reclaimed the NBBF/Zenith Bank Basketball League title after edging First Bank 66-64 in a thrilling overtime final at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday evening.
MFM, who missed out on a third consecutive title last year after losing to First Bank in the semifinals, came close to surrendering the championship again after allowing their advantage to slip away in the final quarter.
The two-time champions dominated the opening three quarters, taking the first 11-6, the second 13-12 and the third 19-17 to establish a 43-35 lead heading into the final period.
However, the Elephant Girls mounted a spirited comeback, winning the fourth quarter 21-13 to level the game at 56-56 at the end of regulation time and force overtime.
With the championship hanging in the balance, MFM held their nerve to win the extra period 10-8, securing their third league title in four years.
The victory also capped an unbeaten campaign for MFM, who won all their matches during the 2026 league season, including three victories over First Bank.
Earlier, Nigeria Customs claimed the bronze medal after defeating ASO SKY Queens 51-38 in the third-place playoff.
