Matebese takes charge as Triathlon union unveils new executive

The Nigerian triathlon landscape is set for a fresh chapter following the election of Mrs Matebese as the new president of the Nigeria Triathlon Union (NTU), with the new administration pledging to expand the sport’s reach across the country.

Matebese emerged at the union’s congress, which also served as its general assembly, held on Wednesday, September 30, at the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) headquarters inside the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

She takes over from Wale Oladunjoye, who had been at the helm since 2018 and opted for fresh elections after completing two terms in office. Her emergence marks a leadership transition expected to bring renewed attention to the growth and organisation of triathlon in Nigeria.

Joining Matebese on the new executive are Abiona Babarinde as first vice president, Olukayode Oguntayo as second vice president, Priscilla Iroaganachi as secretary-general, Raliat Abdulsalam as deputy secretary-general and Modupeola Ofonedo as treasurer.

The new administration is expected to place emphasis on regular competitions, grassroots development, school-based programmes and wider public awareness as part of efforts to strengthen the sport’s foundation.

Speaking after her election, Matebese described her emergence as an opportunity to usher Nigerian triathlon into a new phase of development.
