NFF installs committees for transparent election

Nigeria’s football leadership race for 2026 has officially gathered momentum following the inauguration of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee, signaling the start of the countdown to a crucial election year.

With the September 26 polls in Lafia already fixed, the NFF has moved to lay a solid foundation for a seamless transition by putting the necessary structures in place to oversee the process.

At the inauguration held Thursday at the NFF Secretariat in Abuja, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau emphasized the importance of credibility in the electoral process, urging committee members to uphold integrity, fairness, and professionalism throughout their assignment.

The newly constituted Electoral Committee is expected to supervise the entire election process, while the Appeals Committee, chaired by Hon. Justice C. J. Aneke, will handle disputes arising from the exercise.

Barrister Matthew Burka’a (SAN), speaking on behalf of the committees, assured that the process would not only meet expectations but also set a new standard for football administration in Nigeria.

“We are committed to delivering a free, fair and widely acceptable election,” he said, adding that the committees are fully aware of the scrutiny from both local and international football bodies.

The Electoral Committee includes Alhaji Babagoni Grema, Alhaji Bature Musa, Ayibaye Peter Great Temedie, and Hon. (Dr) Akogun Olugbenga Omole, with Arinze Azubuike Anughele and Abayomi Akin Omoyimi serving as alternates.

On the other hand, the Appeals Committee features Barrister Benjamin Sati and Professor Abdulmalik Awwal as members, alongside alternate members Emmanuel Dada Obafemi and Ayi Ekpo Ukpayam.

In accordance with NFF statutes, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi will serve as secretary to both committees, ensuring administrative efficiency.

The event was attended by prominent figures in Nigeria’s sports ecosystem, including National Institute for Sports Director General Philip Shaibu, NFF First Vice President Felix Anyansi-Agwu, and Executive Committee members Silas Agara and George Aluo.

With the framework now in place and timelines confirmed, stakeholders across Nigerian football have begun to shift focus to what promises to be a defining election that could shape the future of the game in the country.
