WAFCON 2026: Rachael Kundananji determined to claim another win over Super Falcons
Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji says the Copper Queens are determined to end their long wait for a victory over Nigeria when the two sides meet in a crucial WAFCON 2026 encounter.
In previous four encounters, Nigeria have won three while Zambia solitary victory came in the third place match of WAFCON 2022 with a 1-0 win.
The Bay FC forward admitted that Zambia's previous meetings with the Super Falcons have mostly ended without success but believes the upcoming fixture presents another opportunity to rewrite history.
"We have played so many times against Nigeria and no win. Winning them means a lot not just to us but the entire Zambian nation. As a team, it is a motivation. Playing against big players makes us become good and challenge ourselves," Kundananji said.
The 25-year-old revealed that the squad is in high spirits ahead of the decisive contest, acknowledging the importance of the match for both teams.
"The morale is high and the team is ready. We understand it won't be an easy task because it is the game that will determine both teams and the game that will make everything easy. It won't be an easy game but we will do our best," she added.
Kundananji stressed that mental and physical preparation will be key against a Nigerian side with vast experience on the continental stage.
"We all know that it won't be an easy game. We just need to be prepared mentally and physically. It is not a matter of how tough the game is but how you take it. The team is fully prepared for it."
Having faced Nigeria on several occasions, the prolific forward believes both sides know exactly what to expect from each other.
"It is not new to us and not the first time we are playing Nigeria. We know what they are capable of and I am sure they also know what we are capable of. We have played several times together."
The highly anticipated clash promises to be one of the standout fixtures of WAFCON 2026, with Zambia hoping to secure a historic first victory over the nine-time African champions and strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout stages.
