NFF launches probe into Nigeria's national team recent setbacks
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has constituted a fact finding committee to investigate the recent poor performances of the country’s national teams in international competitions, with particular focus on the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The decision follows the Super Falcons’ disappointing campaign at the ongoing 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the ten time champions and defending title holders were eliminated at the quarter-final stage.
Nigeria subsequently suffered a 1-2 defeat to South Africa in the playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs, effectively ending the country’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The setback means Nigeria will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition was inaugurated in 1991. The development is a major blow to the Super Falcons’ status as the most successful women’s football team in Africa.
The NFF said the committee will examine the factors responsible for the recent setbacks suffered by the country’s national teams and make recommendations that could help restore Nigeria’s football fortunes.
Former NFF General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, will chair the committee.
Other members are former Nigeria U20 coach and President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Coach Ladan Bosso; former Super Falcons captain, multiple Women’s AFCON winner and FIFA World Cup star Desire Oparanozie; former Super Eagles captain, AFCON winner and FIFA World Cup star Mutiu Adepoju; and former FIFA referee, Dr. Alex Mana.
Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Mallam Mohammed Nasiru Sa’idu, will serve as secretary.
